Interpretation Intern, Summer 2006
Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site
Organization Overview:
Washington, Texas truly is the "Birthplace of Texas". It was here that 59 delegates from across Texas met on March 1, 1836 to declare independence from Mexico. During the Convention of 1836, prominent men including Sam Houston and George Childress created the Texas Declaration of Independence, a Constitution, and the first Texas government. Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is home to Independence Hall, the Star of the Republic Museum and Barrington Living History Farm, the original home of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Mission Statement: To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
Intern Responsibilities
Job Description:
The primary duties of the intern are to provide daily tours of Independence Hall and to work at the visitor center information desk. Interns also have a major project that relates to interpretation and requires a fair amount of research. I developed a self-guided audio tour for the 1/4 mile trail that passes through the old Washington townsite (see picture at left), and it will hopefully be implemented in the near future. I was also given the opportunity to dress in 1850's style clothing and participate in a photoshoot for the Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau! An internship at Washington-on-the-Brazos will polish your public speaking skills more than you can imagine, and it is a great way to gain experience working for a state agency.
Requirements:
There are not any specific requirements for this position, but it is very important to have a basic understanding of interpretive concepts. You must also be able to speak in front of 30+ people (all ages). Previous customer service experience is extremely helpful.
Hours: 40 hours per week, usually 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday-Friday.
Pay: Texas Parks and Wildlife pays interns based on their classification. As a senior, I earned about $9.92/hour.
Housing: I commuted from College Station, so I am not sure if housing is available on site.
Benefits: 25% discount in the gift shop and free subscription to TPWD Magazine.
Networking: The Park Superintendent and Lead Interpreter are Aggies, and graduates of the RPTS department.
Agency Issues and Concerns: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is facing a severe cut in funding, which may affect future internship positions.
