Position: Pines School Intern for Gibson Park

Organization Overview:

Mission of Organization: Gibson Park is an outdoor class room for Pines School Students and a neighborhood park for Pointe Aux Pins. The 2.25 acre park was donated to the Pines School Board by Catherine A. Hodgeson on July 15, 1974.

Gibson Park is located on beautiful Bois Blanc Island, Michigan at the corner of Sioux and Comanche Avenue next to the Pines School. The Pines School is a public one room schoolhouse currently serving one teacher and two students. The Pines School serves K-5 through eighth grade students.

Until the summer of 2006, Gibson Park was an undeveloped forest. The primary vegetation on the property is a mature forest of red and white pine, birch and maple. The topography of Gibson Park is predominately flat with a small ridge running parallel to the north property line. North of the ridge, lies a cedar swamp. Several natural features provide Gibson Park with unique characteristics such as: a tree with a limb shaped like a bench, a tree that is rotted out and looks like a face is in the trunk of the tree, roots covered in moss, a tree with termite damage and six pine trees in a circle.
