Mission:
Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is a not-for-profit, community-owned, health care system with spiritual values, dedicated to providing high quality health services in order to improve the health of the people in Southeast Texas.
Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital:
A not-for-profit hospital in the 16 hospital Memorial Hermann System in the greater Houston Area. The system employs 18,800 people with a payroll of nearly $1 billion. Memorial Hermann has the only hospital-based air ambulance program in Houston. Memorial Hermann Life Flight is committed to providing safe, rapid, quality and cost effective air medical transport to everyone in need regardless of their ability to pay. The Woodlands Hospital is dedicated to serving citizens in The Woodlands, Spring, Oakride, Magnolia and surrounding areas with the best possible treatment. Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands is the only level 4 trama center in north Houston, so any trama patients that cannot be taken downtown to Memorial Hermann in The Medical Center are taken here. As a community hospital, there is a strong bond between the hospital and locals in the community.
Intern Responsibilities
Job Description:
As an Administrative Intern, I worked primarily in the Performance Excellence department under the hospital's four Six Sigma Black Belts. Six Sigma is a methodology for making process improvements in any business setting, and Black Belts are those who have received extensive training in how to recognize, revise and implement changes in the organization. I worked directly with mid and senior level exectutives, Managers, Directors, CMO, COO, CFO, CEO and Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons and other clinical staff on a variety of projects in administrative and clinical settings. I also participated in meetings, conferences, and committees and voted on changes to hospital policies and procedures. Other opportunities included leading a project to be implemented while employed at the hospital and travel to other Memorial Hermann Hospitals in the Houston area for meetings and training.
Requirements & Qualifications:
Must be in your Senior Year or Graduated from a major four year university. Have a focus in Business, Healthcare or health sciences, or plan on pursuing a graduate degree in Hospital Administration or Public Health. Skills required are those associated with successful completion of a business major or minor, spreadsheet and data base software, and knowledge of accounting, finance, marketing and management principles. Must be eager and willing to participate in meetings and presentations with administrators at all levels. Must present a professional demeanor and appearance at all times. Must be comfortable working in a clinical setting, i.e. observing surgeries, interaction with patients and their families, having increased exposure to contagious illnesses.
