Resource Division Intern, Summer 2006
Death Valley National Park Mission Statement: Death Valley National Park dedicates itself to protecting significant desert features that provide world class scenic, scientific, and educational opportunities for visitors and academics to explore and study.
"A superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and three million acres of stone wilderness. Home to the Timbisha Shoshone and to plants and animals unique to the harshest of deserts. A place of legend and a place of trial."
Overview
My internship allowed me to work with archaeologists, wildlife biologists, museum techs, curators, interpretive rangers, and other interns. I was able to work on a number of different projects including cave surveying, surveying burn sites with the archaeologists, charting siesmic activities on the water level tables of Devil's Hole, field work with the hydrology rangers, and some museum and curation work. This internship also provided me with a number of recreational opportunities that would be hard or impossible to find elsewhere.
Benefits
Housing and bills were provided for free of charge. I was also given access to government vehicles and gas for traveling while working. I gained experience and a number of contacts within the NPS. Due to the difficulty of getting into the NPS as a permanent employee the experience and networking was the greatest benefit.
Requirements
There were no required skills for the postition. However, the more skills an applicant can list on his/her resume they greatly increase their advantage over other applicants.
