Summer 2006 Internship: Disc Golf Course Planning


Agency Overview:


Mission: "To provide a diversity of facilities and leisure services that are geographically and demographically accessible to our citizens."


Headquarters: The City of College Station Parks and Recreation Department is located in the city's beautiful central park. Take Texas Avenue south past Southwest Parkway. Make a left on Krenek Tap Road and stay on it for about a mile. Then make a right into Central Park. The Headquarters is located off to the right in large log house.


Internship Position:


Brief Background: There were several different internships available at the Department. I was given the option of choosing one of the following projects: disc golf course planning, trail design and improvement, interpretive program for selected park sites, etc.

Job Description and Duties: I chose disc golf planning and was given the following task. The Department is planning to build a new disc golf course somewhere in town and asked me to gather the following information:

- Investigate and Research the existing disc golf courses in the Bryan/College Station area.

- Collect information on the various providers of disc golf services in the College Station area.

- Obtain specific information regarding disc golf facilities and design criteria.

- Analyze the existing courses' location, support facilities, course difficulty, and scenic attributes.

- Create a comprehensive inventory of the existing disc golf course facilities and local contacts.

- Develop recommendations on potential park locations for a new course and programs that will encourage the use of those facilities.

- Present those findings to the Parks and Recreation Board.

- Prepare a reference document in a three ring binder that includes rules, regulations, governing bodies, facility design and maintenance.


Benefits and Opportunites: Being an intern at the City of College Station Parks and Recreation Department gave me an opportunity to do an internship right here in town so I could be able to easily attend summer school. I got to work closely with the officers in the Parks Department. Here some other benefits:
