Overview:
The Bryan Parks and Recreation Department was founded in 1956 and maintains 43 park properties made up pf nearly 750 acres. Picnic areas, golf courses, camp grounds, and walking trails are just a few of the recreational activities offered through the department. Other facilities such as tennis courts, city pools and the Bryan Aquatic Center are also run through the department.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITES
Summary:
I assist the Recreation Manager and Special Events Coordinator with special events and coordinating Palace Theater events. My main project is working on the Texas Reds Steak and Grape Festival to take place on June 20th and 21st, 2008
Essential funtions:
- Participates in creative thinking, planning, and implementing events from beginning to end, including clean-up. - Manages multiple events at any given time and organizes the components of the events. - Organizes logistics, marketing, volunteer recruitment, vendor solicitation and event management for the Texas Reds Steak and Grape Festival - Assists with marketing (radio, news paper, television, flyers) for the Parks & Recreation activities and events. - Draft and edit letters, print media, and website material. - Other duties in the Parks & Recreation office include answering calls from residents, reserving park pavilions, and performing any other task given by managers.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education & Experience: High School diploma/GED and experience, knowledge or interest in pursuing exposure to Parks & Recreation special event planning and coordination
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Proficient at using computer Microsoft Word, Publisher, and Excel; Adobe Photoshop and PageMaker. - Ability to network with businesses and the community. - Ability to accomplish tasks based upon broad instructions and general supervision. - Ability to work with various departments within the city to coordinate special events. - Ability to work under pressure and meet time lines. - Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. - Ability to prepare clear and concise written materials and possess excellent editing skills. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, businesses, and the general public. - Strong spelling, grammar and punctuation skills. - Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Benefits and Opportunities:
Working for the City of Bryan Parks and Recreation Department has many advantages. I was able to obtain an inside view of event coordinating and I had fun! This is a paid internship of $7.00/hr and can be acknowledged for school credit. The benefits of working on a new up and coming event are endless. The internship was fun because the staff helps you and trusts you to take over projects. You meet many new people and take home valuable building blocks that can be applied to any job.
Achievements:
I was honored with the responsibility of coordinating two areas of the festival: - The Grape Treasure Hunt which was a program to involve the downtown merchants during the event - The Chef Exhibitions featuring the top chefs in the area demonstrating exquisite grilling techniques I also learned new writing styles, a scheduling program, budget, sponsorship, and time management.
